Yay! My birthday is just around the corner and my super-sweet current squeeze gave me the gift of craftiness – a sewing machine! I had been looking at them forever and decided that there was no point in getting a fancy-smanchy one since I am a total beginner. I took to the blogisphere to look for reviews and discovered that Ikea has their own version which got some pretty solid reviews. It was relatively inexpensive for a sewing machine (£45) and perfect for a beginner!
He sneaked off yesterday to pick it up and presented it to me when I got home from work as an early gift! Awww shucks 🙂
Now, I’m a sucker for doing research and I had read that setting up a sewing machine can be a total pain. I have little to no patience for Ikea instruction manuals so as part of this gift Ian agreed to set it all up for me, as long as I paid attention 🙂 I tell you, the boy loves a diagram. He had it whipped up in a flash and went over everything again to show me how to do it myself.
I sat down to get to grips with the thing and I can see why some people buy machines and then they just lay in a corner gathering dust. They can be pretty irksome and fiddly! I got to grips with the basic stitches and worked out how to end them off nicely. I think it’s gonna take some time before I build up enough confidence to start a proper project, so for now I will stick to practising on an old pillow case! Watch this space!
