‘Is this thing on?’

Erm… Hello? Excuse me while I shuffle, self-consciously back into the spotlight. It’s been a while! I feel like I should go do a whole passage of time monologue a-la Twilight New Moon but I’ll spare you that and simply insert a relevant gif…

So what’s the craik? Well I’ve been BUSY! Not with anything really blog-able but just my general existence has been one hectic mess. I got a promotion at work towards the end of last year which put me in a bit of a tail-spin-freak-out but things have settled down a bit now and we’re in a calm period. I’ve also been stress-crafting my way through wedding preparations because I GET MARRIED THIS YEAR! True to form, I thought I would recap my thoughts and feelings about that whole thing in a series of gifs (because who has the time to produce original content, right?)

Yeah… That about sums it up.

I’ve made a lot of stuff recently but my one regret is that I’ve had to put sewing on the back burner. I’ve made 3 items since we moved into our new house in April and one of those was a Halloween costume (I was Daenerys Targaryen and it was awesome). All my crafting energy has been directed towards items for the wedding because I’m a cheap ass who refuses to pay for anything I can feasibly make myself, no matter how much time it will cost me. My saving grace is that I’m also a fanatical organiser and list maker. I’ve never been so thankful for these somewhat annoying qualities than I am right at this very moment. The next 33 weeks of my life are mapped out on a Gant chart (shout out to all my project management fellows) and have it constantly to hand. A cursory glance tells me that I have 32 craft projects to complete before the big day and this would seem obscene if I didn’t have chunks of time blacked out for each one on my chart. I’m actually ahead of schedule right now, not to toot my own horn too much.

So that’s what’s going on here. I have a backlog of things to showcase, so if you fancy sticking around for a gratuitous amount of gifs and my rudimentary understanding of what it means to function as an adult in this world, then please do subscribe.

2016 – More of the Same, Please

Happy New Year my crafty little elves! As you might have guessed, this is my obligatory ‘Welcome to 2016’ post with a little round-up of the previous year. I’ve really enjoyed reading some of these posts from other bloggers so I thought I would do one too!

2015 year in review boldly gold

2015 was the best year of my life. I feel like it flew in and slowed down at all the right times for me to enjoy the best parts. By far the most monumental and exciting thing was getting engaged! Of the best year of my life, the 14th of September 2015 is definitely the best day. We also bought a house which we will be able to move into in April! We went on a lot of trips – Marrakech being a highlight – and generally just enjoyed spending time together.

2016 is going to have a different vibe, but definitely not in a bad way. There will be a severe lack of fancy holidays and a lot more saving going on. We don’t actually own any furniture (aside from a coffee table and my sewing desk) so there’s going to be a lot of cash rapidly flying out of our savings account in preparation for the big move. Not only that, but we are also saving up for our wedding in 2017! Needless to say we will still enjoy ourselves, but our trips will be to the likes of Ikea and DFS instead of Morocco 🙂

Instead of resolutions I have a list of things I want to do in 2016 so I thought I would share them here.

Continue to scrapbook our lives

Decorate our new house and do A LOT more DIY

Design and send out save the dates for our wedding

Pick a wedding dress

Learn calligraphy

Make a bodice and skirt block

Start writing my book

Finally make the Archer shirt

All pretty achievable I think! Obviously the decorating will be a major WIP and I don’t expect to complete it this year, but it would be great to have the living room, craft room and master bedroom finished. The book thing is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time and I’ve had an idea playing about in my head for ages. I feel a bit awkward sharing the premise here as I don’t really think you guys want to know how depraved my mind really is. Think murder most foul and you’re 1/8 of the way there. I also want to take better care of myself but that’s not really a resolution, more of a life choice to avoid having a heart attack at 30.

I’ve been blogging for exactly 3 years now and I’m ridiculously proud of this little site. I enjoy tinkering with the code and giving it a bit of a facelift every now and again. I’ll definitely continue to write here until it no longer feels fun to do so, which seems quite impossible right now. So in 2016 you can expect more sewing, new crafts, home improvements and wedding chat from Boldly Gold! I hope you enjoy reading as much as I enjoy writing.

We Bought a House

You read that right, folks. We bought a house! We’re grown-ups, adults, home-owners… Well we will be once the damn thing is built! I know I’m incredibly lucky to be in this situation but it’s all quite overwhelming. I want to share how we got to this point for posterity and maybe it might help someone else who is stumbling around the internet in the same situation that I was in a few months ago! It might get a bit long-winded and I’ll probably overuse gifs – you have been warned!

It was the end of January 2015 and after a random discussion about how much money we’ve spent on rent living together for the past 3 years, Ian and I seriously started to to consider buying a house. We had the ‘money talk’ which is never not awkward and set ourselves a rough budget for our first home. Unbeknownst to us, we greatly underestimated how much houses actually cost in our area! Anyway, I took on the job of looking around for places that fit our ‘want list’ which was along the lines of:

  • 3 Bedrooms
  • A garden
  • in the South Lanarkshire area
  • Enough space for a craft room*

*I’m seriously not kidding about the last point. A craft room is good for my sanity and Ian whole-heartedly agrees. He’s a good egg 🙂

Anyway, once I had narrowed down the options, we came to the conclusion that a new build would suit our needs best. Thankfully there are more than a few developments under way in the area but we were sure that we wanted to stay close to a main street and not just in the middle of a sea of houses. This definitely made things more difficult when searching as it’s so hard to tell without knowing the overall area. I thought it would be a great idea to visit 8 sites in the 1 day to quickly and efficiently rule out the unsuitable plots… It went a bit like this:

We couldn’t find site 1… Liked number 2… Hated number 3… LOVED number 4… Decided it was too expensive… Half-heartedly mooched around 5 and 6… Loathed number 7 and gave up by number 8.

We were driving around the Greater Glasgow area for 8 hours that day. I do not recommend it.

That night and the next day we couldn’t get site number 4 out of our heads. I felt absolutely gutted that it wasn’t going to be our home. I even have the Snapchat story to prove it.

At this point there was A LOT of soul searching and after speaking to our families and a financial advisor, we came to the conclusion that yes, it was more than what we originally wanted to spend, but actually we could afford it. Obviously the cheap-skate in me took over when we were deciding our budget! Decision made – we went for it! After that there was lots of back and forth between ourselves, the house builder, the financial advisor and our solicitor. I don’t think I’ve ever sent as many emails in such a short space of time. The main thing is now everything is signed and we are officially signed up for our house! Cue the dancing girls!

So our house is being built by a Scottish company called Springfield who are based in Elgin. They work a bit differently to other builders in that they won’t actually start building the house until you’ve signed a contract and paid a partial deposit. Our estimated date for completion isn’t until February/March 2016 which seems like an age away, but I’ve already had to make all the interior decisions for our home! A lot of new builds include kitchen cabinets and maybe a bathroom suite but I was overwhelmed with what is actually included in our house price…

  • A choice of kitchen cabinets and worktops
  • Integrated Smeg appliances (cooker, microwave and fridge/freezer)
  • Washing Machine
  • Dishwasher
  • Porcelanosa tiles for all bathrooms
  • Vanity units for all bathrooms
  • Carpet and lino throughout the whole house
  • Painted walls
  • Interior doors, handles, sockets and switches
  • Turfed front and back garden
  • Paved driveway
  • Fitted wardrobes in all bedrooms

I’ve probably forgotten things but holy cow that’s a lot of decisions to make. And we’re not talking having a choice of 2 options… We were sent to full-out showrooms for the tiles, bathrooms, kitchen and wardrobes! To say I was overwhelmed is putting it mildly. However, I have to say the process was actually very lovely and all the suppliers couldn’t have been any more helpful, especially the lovely lady who showed us around at Porcelanosa! I’m not 100% sure everything is actually going to match – especially the paint colours in each room as those decisions were made after maybe 1 too many gins on a Friday evening – but they’re pretty much confirmed in blood now so if it’s all a riot you can be sure I’ll be crying about it here in 6 months time.

Speaking of interiors… Remember when I used to blog about DIY projects? My most viewed post to this date is still my Ikea Lack Coffee Table Hack so you can expect an uptake of things like that in the new year as I struggle to furnish my new house! In the meantime I have a few interior-related posts which I want to share which I hope you’ll enjoy! I couldn’t be more excited about this huge, grown-up step Ian and I are taking together…. Hurry up 2016!

One Song Workouts

Have you heard of One Song Workouts? The clue really is in the title… Basically it’s a short, but intense, workout which only lasts the duration of a single song! Not one to miss out on a fad I gave it a go and I have to say it’s not a bad way to get your blood pumping! I have a love-hate relationship with exercise, meaning that I love to moan about it and I hate every thing but running outside. I get bored pretty easily so the short bursts of activity suit me to a tee. I’m not ashamed to admit that I did them during the ad breaks of my favourite TV programmes.

Follow Boldly Gold’s board One Song Workouts on Pinterest.
I rounded up a whole collection ofone song workouts and shoved them into a Pinterest board which you can browse at your leisure 🙂 If you like what you see then why not follow the board so you will be the first to see any new additions! FEEL THE BURNNNN.//assets.pinterest.com/js/pinit.js

The New and Improved Boldly Gold

OHMIGOSH THIS IS SO EXCITING! I finally managed to crawl out of the self-hosted hole that I’ve been trapped in for 3 weeks! Lets give a warm welcome to the new and improved Boldly Gold! A lot has changed round these parts and I have so much to share with you so lets just dive right in!

First off, do you like my new design? For those of you who know/care about blogging I’m using a Duena Child Theme which has been heavily edited to my exact specifications. Let me tell you coding is not for the faint of heart. I honestly thought I was just going to end it all at one point… Yes, it got that dark. If you guys feel like you want to hear more about how I went from a wordpress.com blog to self-hosting using wordpress.org then just let me know 🙂 Feel free to roam around, get used to our new surroundings. Check out the fancy new slider at the top of the home page which will feature some of my favourite posts! My sweat, blood and tears went into this project so I hope you like it as much as I do! I’m in the process of trying to transfer over all of my subscribers from the old site but I’m not getting my hopes up too soon that it will actually happen. So, I highly recommend that you follow this blog (and a bunch of others) on Bloglovin to keep up-to-date with all of my Boldly Gold goodness.

I think one of the reasons this whole transition took me so long was that I have seen SO BUSY over the last few weeks. It’s honestly been non-stop so grab a beverage and let me fill you in!

After I last spoke to you I whisked Ian away to Bruges for the weekend which was absolutely lovely. We travelled down to Hull to catch a mini-cruise which would take us there through the night which was a nice change to flying. We spend 2 full days in the city and 1 night at the NH Bruges which was lovely so I highly recommend staying there if you’re ever in that part of the world. We spend out days sight-seeing and I got on everyone’s Ian’s nerves by sticking my camera in his face every 2 minutes. It really is a lovely city and we basically just ate mussels, visited museums, drank beer and enjoyed each other’s company for the whole time that we were there. Absolute bliss!

On the way home we stopped by Cheshire Oaks Outlet Village which, ohmygod, is like heaven on earth! I picked up a dress from Coast for an upcoming wedding for an absolute steal and then perved over some Mulberry handbags. It. Was. Great.

I’ve been flexing my crafty muscles of late which has been an absolute treat. I finally managed to piece together all of the blocks for a quilt I started before Christmas and then realised that I had made 2 extra squares which worked out well as these were transformed into matching pillows! You didn’t think I would waste fabric did you!

I also bit the bullet and atempted to make the Pinterest-famous Rainbow Cake… and I think it turned out quite well!

Other crafty pursuits have involved trying to learn how to knit and buying specalist craft magazines. I can’t believe I just said that on the internet… What a dweeb! I’ve become a SEW magazine addict and have even made a cute Easter toy from an actual pattern which came with last month’s issue. I’ve tentatively named him Mortimer.

Aside from crafting, I have spent a good portion of my time attending the spa! I would love to let you all think that this was a regular occurrence in my life but the simple truth is that I received 101 spa day treats as Christmas gifts and they just so happened to fall one after the other. I’m so god-damn relaxed that I’m stressed. Here is a cheeky spa selfie that I took last weekend at my friends Hen party…

See… Soo relaxed!

When I’ve not been crafting or getting my pamper on, I have been glued to the TV! If you haven’t heard about the Great British Sewing Bee then you need to change that immediately! The program basically follows the structure of the ever popular Great British Bake Off (you’re spotting a theme right?) but instead of baking the skill is sewing. I’m totally hooked!

So that’s basically what I’ve been up to recently! I’m off to London this weekend with my Mum to eat, drink and be merry so you can expect a round-up of that trip in the not-to-distant future. I would love to hear about what you guys have been up to so leave me a comment down below 🙂 Also, don’t forget to stop by my social media endeavours by clicking the swish (I made them myself) new links in the side bar! Finally I just want to say thanks for coming back to Boldly Gold and you can bet your bottom dollar that I’ll be sticking around for a good long while! ILY ❤

All Quiet on the Western Front…

Hello my pretties! This is just a quick post to say that tomorrow the Boldly Gold that you know and love will be undergoing some major changes! That’s right we’re going self-hosted baby!!!

I will be taking a couple of days to transfer everything over and hopefully on Friday we should be back in business! I’m not really sure how things will look in the meantime, there may be a holding page up here and there, but don’t fret! I will be back with a vengeance very soon with a fresh new look and some very exciting and big plans!

I now have a plea… If you are reading this and don’t already, PLEASE FOLLOW THIS BLOG ON BLOGLOVIN (or any other outsourced blog reader of your choice). I have prepared my mind for this switch over but if you are reading this via a WordPress reader then there is a chance that I might lose you! I don’t want that to happen cause I love each and every one of you so if you feel the same way, please take heed!

At this point I just want to thank each and every one of you who do come to this blog and read all of my drivel. If it wasn’t for your support and encouragement I wouldn’t be the odd little fellow that I am today! If I could squeeze you all in person, I would.

In the meantime, feel free to come and chat to me on Twitter, Facebook or Google+! I will be there with bells on and probably in dire need of someone to pull me out of a ‘self-hosted pit of despair’
